Apple's New Animated Series, "Central Park"

March 18, 2018

In a rare move, Apple has acquired the rights to Loren Bouchard's "Central Park" from 20th Century Fox.

Bouchard's most famous show to date is Bob's Burgers.  It looks like his new show will be split up into 2 seasons of 13 episodes each, the format being a musical comedy, perfect to tie in with Apple Music, where it will be shown.

Written by Bouchard, Josh Gad, and Nora Smith, the series is described as telling the story of how a family of caretakers, who live and work in Central Park, end up saving the park, and basically the world.

We are certainly fans of any original programming taking place near the Park, and we can't wait to see this show and what it will bring.

Central Park's Oldest Architecture

February 12, 2018

Curbed takes a tour of Central Park's notable architecture, starting south on the Lake.

Don't miss this video tour posted by Curbed, one of our favorite publications!

Perhaps the most stunning architectural marvel in the park, the Bethesda Terrace Arcade sits behind Stebbins’ Angel and features 15,000 multicolored Minton Tiles. These same tiles line the floor of the U.S. Capitol, yet the Arcade is the only known example in the world where Minton Tiles cover a ceiling.

Max, Rocky, Charlie & Buddy: The Dogs of New York!

February 11, 2018

Excellent article in the New York Times about the evolution and preference of dog breeds across NYC's different neighborhoods.

The article examines the dog ownership trends as they relate to the real estate of New York City.

As housing prices rise in an area, dog breeds tend to skew smaller and more expensive. But certain breeds maintain their dominance, like the pit bull in certain parts of Brooklyn and the Rottweiler in the Bronx.

And Central Park is certainly one fo the most popular and dog-friendly areas of the city, but the trends are changing as new developments tout their pet-friendly attitudes and the popularity of other parks increase.

Darshan Patel, 29, and his wife, Chandni, 28, live with their 2-year-old miniature poodle, Miles, at 555TEN, a new 600-unit luxury rental tower in Hudson Yards, on the Far West Side of Midtown. Mr. Patel, who owns the pharmacy Manhattan Apothecary, said they moved from New Jersey to rent a one-bedroom apartment in the 56-story tower, where studios were going for $4,050 a month

70 Years of Sheep Meadow, the Humble Beginning of Central Park

February 4, 2018

Business Insider features a great article about the time before the Central Park we all know and love.

The entire 70-year history of Sheep Meadow is profiled in the article below:

Dubbed Sheep Meadow, the reserve hosted around 200 pedigree Southdown sheep for 70 years. Visitors would watch the flock of sheep while they grazed. The idea was to help Sheep Meadow further the mission of Central Park, envisioned by its architects as a refuge from the stresses of urban living.

Slow January for Luxury Real Estate Sales

January 31, 2018

Unfortunately, today we report a bit of negative news in the NYC luxury market.

According to Olshan Realty's Market Report, January 2018 was the slowest on Record since 2012, as reported by the Real Deal.

There were 15 contracts signed at $4 million and above last week, ending the month’s total at 68. That represents a 29 percent decline from a year ago, and the lowest total since January 2012, a month that saw just 40 luxury deals inked.

Extreme weather as well as uncertainty regarding the recently passed tax reform bill are thought to be the cause of the slow month.

There are a few things you expect to see when you walk into the park: Dogs chasing frisbees, kids running around and people playing catch. You don't expect that those people will be the reigning AL and NL Cy Young Award winners.

A History of Ice Skating in NYC

January 24, 2018

Central Park housed New York City's first ice skating rink way back in 1858, and it has become a staple of winter life here.

The Museum of the City New York's current exhibit, " New York on Ice: Skating in the City," is an interesting look at the history of the activity in our city, as detailed in this excellent, very detailed article in Hypoallergic. And... Photos!

Together, the objects illustrate how ice skating manifested as commercialized leisure, as fashionable performance, and as a competitive sport.

The exhibit runs through April 15.

Park or Playground?

January 8, 2018

The definition of the Marx Brothers Playground in East Harlem could be the difference between a proposed development, and could set a precedent for the future.

Both the project’s proponents and its critics say the dispute illuminates not just the future of this one patch of synthetic turf, but also an existential question facing New York City as its growing population jostles for housing, schools and a place to breathe.

Pop Up Parks in NYC Parking Spots, aka Street Seats!

August 26, 2017

Great, short article in the NY Times about some temporary parks popping up in parking spots over the summer.

From the article (no paywall):

The space felt intimate and, dare we say, calm, even as cars whizzed by a few feet away. The Ipe (Brazilian walnut) wood flooring, arranged like a boardwalk deck, is surrounded by bright yellow scotch broom shrubs, purple Russian sage plants and coral bells that hang in brown fabric pouches on a fence made of bamboo. Solar panels collect energy to power the park’s L.E.D.s at night.

Extell's Central Park Tower Priced Highest in History?

August 16, 2017

Extell, the massive Billionaire's Row developer responsible for One57 unveiled the proposed pricing for the premium units in their upcoming project, Central Park Tower, which includes 20 units priced at $60 million!

Since 2012, there have been just 61 sales of residential properties for north of $30 million in Manhattan, according to The Real Deal’s analysis of closed sales. Of those sales, 21 closed at $40 million or more and just 13 traded for over $60 million. Even in 2015, when the market was on amphetamines, only four sales at $60 million or above were recorded. This year so far, three sales have closed at over $60 million.
