The building was originally the Gulf and Western, designed by Thomas E. Stanley and built in 1969.
Between 1995 and 1997, the new building was designed by Costas Kondylis with Philip Johnson, Alan Ritchie & Fiore as the design architect who turned a drab office building into a dazzling monument. The building is located at the southwest corner gateway to Central Park and offers unobstructed park views. Its first floor is devoted to the Forbes Five-Star and Five-Diamond restaurant, Jean Georges.
There are separate entrances to the hotel and the apartments. The hotel went through a total renovation in 2010, updating the overall style. The luxury suites and guestrooms feature fully equipped kitchens, and floor-to-ceiling windows. It is the only Forbes Five-Star and Five-Diamond hotel and houses Trump SpaTM, an extensive fitness center, and a 55-foot heated indoor pool, 24 hour room service, business center with private conference rooms, and a personal concierge that fulfill hotel guests' unique requests.
The condominiums range widely in sizes and layouts from a studio with an open kitchen and an 18-foot-long guest room, to a penthouse that has a 50-foot-wide living/dining room that overlooks Columbus Circle with five bedrooms including three that overlook Central Park. Some of the apartments have bidets.
All the residences feature floor-to-ceiling windows and top of the line appliances.
There are two types of ownerships: One may own a piece of hotel suite or one may own a condominium unit. When one owns a hotel suite, during the time that it is unoccupied by the owner, it becomes an investment property and will be rotated out to hotel guests.
